UAL Project Proposal

SECTION ONE- Rationale (100-150 words) 143 words

Through two years of the studying on my course I have done a lot of coursework on pre-production, such as storyboarding, scripts etc. In production I learnt how to communicate with hearing peers to improve my confidence. For post- production; I learnt about editing, such as adding subtitles, adding effects to make it interesting for my audience etc. I feel that some of my skills have improved, such as the pre production coursework which I enjoyed the most including the lighting while in production. I use to have some criticism about the lighting but now it’s improved because I used ‘Final Cut Pro’ to change the shade of lighting to make the film easy to see. My decision for my FMP is a short documentary film because it is my final opportunity to show my skills and improvements such as with the lighting.

SECTION TWO- Project Concept (200-250 words) 219 words

My idea for my final media project is the short documentary film about Deaf people experience in mainstream college, such as Exeter College. In addition, my aim of the final project is to make my target audience understand what is it like to be Deaf in a mainstream college- what is it like to be Deaf surrounded by hearing peers? How do they cope with hearing peers? What method of the communication the Deaf student uses to communicate with hearing people?

I will use both primary and secondary research; I will research using books from the library to find out about how to create professional vlogs and a documentary film. In addition, I will also use SurveyMonkey to create some questions for my hearing and deaf peers about their experience in mainstream college. For secondary research, I will also look at YouTube for guides from people who create vlogs- how it works and what type of shots and editing they use. I will use the Internet to research information about my chosen practitioner who is a Deaf director called Bim Ajadi, I will his work about ‘Underwear Awareness’. I want to look at how he uses different shots, his style of the editing etc. to help me build an idea of what I would expect from my documentary film.

SECTION THREE- Evaluation (50- 100 words) 97 words

At the end of each day I will evaluate the progress of my project to explain and how I am doing with my progress through pre -production, production and post -production. I will also explain the positive and negative of my day and suggest any improvements for example if I finish the film early then I could evaluate it to see if there are any necessary improvements like the lighting. In addition I will use production journal to record my progress every day up until the end. I will also add in the date of each day.

FMP (Final Media Project)

PART ONE- IDEAS

MY PRODUCTION JOURNAL FOR MY IDEA DEVELOPMENT

DATE OF WEEK 1: Monday 20th- Friday 24th February 2017 (include Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th February 2017).

THURSDAY 23RD FEBRUARY: This week, I am working on the FMP known as Final Media Project and I use PowerPoint to create my idea/ develop of my final media project. I decided to look at some of the units that I studied in my two years, such as corporate video, to help me decide which of these I prefer, to create my final project. I also started to create notes of the key practitioners, for example Brent Macpherson who is Deaf New Zealand director, and other practitioners such as Bim Ajadi, who is also a deaf director for film and TV. Also Walt Disney and Nick Parker, who is an animation director, and Stan Laurel whose is the actor and director of the comedy film series ‘Laurel and Hardy’. I am also thinking about maybe creating a corporate video for the deaf TV and film industry for Camilla Arnold the director of Flashing Lights- Media Without Boundaries, and the See Hear for the Deaf presenter called Memnos Costi.

I will research their work to look through next week and hopefully it should help me to decide which of them is the best practitioner. I will also type to explain why each of is an inspiration to me such as Bim Ajadi who inspires me because he is himself Deaf and I love the way he uses the visualisation in his short film, called ‘Underwear Rule’, to raise awareness aimed at Deaf young people, to protect themselves from sexual abuse. He creates a message which is clear for deaf people, as he uses a deaf actor signing (British Sign Language). So I thought I could create a short documentary film which is about Deaf people’s experience in the mainstream colleges- how do they cope with having hearing peers and the support of a CSW e.g. It could aim at both deaf and hearing college students including the teachers. However it could also aim at year eleven deaf students.

Brent Macpherson inspires me because of his belief in that deaf and hearing people should have the same equality of involvement in the film industry, as he wants to see more Deaf people involved in films as this is rare.

Nick Park inspires me because of his animation work, especially the Wallace and Gromit series. Walt Disney- he inspires me because in my childhood I use to watch a lot of Disney such Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, Peter Pan etc. I also love the way he created animation for the Disney series, watching how using drawing in behind the scenes films, helped me to understand how it works.

Therefore, before I start this project, I need to research my sources making use of books, Internet e.g. to collect the list of both primary and secondary research including using the ‘Harvard Referencing’ system for the bibliography of evidence to give to my tutor. Read More

Unit 12: Specialist Study in Creative Media: Ted Talk

Monday 14th November 2016: Watch the clip of Christopher Bell’s tedtalk presentation

  1. Use presentation; most of images show his daughter as he talks about her.
  2. Connect his audience by:
  • Using facts; uses red bold words to represent important parts relevant to his topic and to create an impact with his audience.
  • Using rhetorical questions- to get his audience thinking.
  • Using the word: ‘you’, ‘we’, ‘our’, ‘your’ to connect his audience.
  • Making his audience laugh by using humor.

3. Using primary and secondary research (research on internet and visiting toy shops for      evidence).

4. Informal presentation (balanced with some formal) for target audience aimed suitably for ages over 16 to about 20 years old (college age).

5. Balancing the serious and comical tone used in the content of his presentation.

6. Some images such as a boy, who hanged himself, in hospital after being bullied for  liking to play with female toys which impacted audience- change their mind about the gender equality.

PART ONE- Critical Frameworks
MEDIA TOPICS
GENRE: http://www.bbc.co.uk/education/guides/z98n4j6/revision
‘Genre’ is a French word. In the media industry, the producers use this to create a film. They have to make sure their audience understands what type of genre is in the film they created. To make them understand, the producers use codes and conventions which are the tools of technical, visual and audio techniques to give the audience the idea of whatever type of genre the film is.

REFLECT ON HOW INTERESTING I FIND THIS ASPECT OF MEDIA:
I find ‘genre’ the most interesting because there are different types of media such as TV and film. In fact I can identify most of the genre while watching any TV or film because of theirs visualise. (106 words)

UNIT 11: PREPARING FOR PROGRESSION

TUESDAY 20TH SEPTEMBER 2016- FRIDAY 16TH DECEMBER 2016

PART ONE: Understanding Progression Routes

  1. Self- Audit and Goal Setting

IMG_3763.JPG

2) Developing your Knowledge:

a) I managed to find more than five universities offering media courses that I am interesting in studying:

518a468d-aaf8-4c30-93e9-bbe6f918a2f9[1].gif

UNIVERSITY OF HERTFORDSHIRE provide some courses I would like to studying and they are:

a) Film and TV production: BA (Hons) Film and Television (Production) with Optional Sandwich Placement / Study Abroad BA (Hons) which is the undergraduate. However, the length of studying are different; if studying for full time, you have a three years. However, you can spend four years on the ‘sandwich’ which means you have to divide four years for university, work experience and another year for university.  http://www.herts.ac.uk/courses/film-and-television-production

b) MA Film and Television (MA) which is postgraduate. If studying for full time you have to spend  one year studying on this course. If doing part time, you have to be studying for two years. http://www.herts.ac.uk/courses/ma-film-and-television

c) BA (Hons) Visual Effects for Film and Television with Optional Sandwich Placement/ Study Abroad BA (Hons) which is undergraduate for ‘sandwich’ over four years. http://www.herts.ac.uk/courses/visual-effects-for-film-and-television

Journal

Friday 6th May 2016:  Today I am doing the evaluation on the last three weeks.

Firstly, in first week (Monday 11th-Friday 15th April 2016):  I created my own production schedule for a bit. This helped me to know the process of my pre production, production and post production before doing proposal: Rational (section one) to explain how well I did in this year doing eight units. I also the second section: Project Concept to explain the resources could use for claymation and section three: evaluation by explaining how can I evaluate my work. Fourth section: is add my production schedule on my blog through I  don’t finish as I continue working out production schedule and finally, section five, I research the bibliography to see the useful sources for my research in part two. In part one: I also did ideas development by deciding which type of animation would I use and also which directors.

Second week: Monday 18th-Friday 22nd April 2016: I continue on production schedule for an hour before start part two :research practitioner which is Nick Park the director of Wallace and Gromit. I also did a survey by writing ideas of questions I could ask my target audience, which is both male and female with general age from eleven years old, before adding on MonkeySurvey and sending it by email and Facebook. I also continue on create the development of ideas and this time I researches the bit of Wallace & Gromit genre and their target audience to give me ideas including their demographic and psychographic and also their TV and film timetable which helps me to work out which day is suitable for my claymation show.

Third week: Monday 25th-Friday 29th April 2016: I finish the research on Nick Park and start on competition which is Ooglies and also look at the facts. I also research about regulation that relates to my animation idea though James said that there are not many regulations for my idea and he suggests that I could research Ofcom and I did. I also look at the concept that relates to my idea and again I research Wallace & Gromit and Ooglies as they are similar to my idea. I did research on claymation technique and their cost/budget production before add it on blog and I manage to finish the production schedule and add on blog. Later, I start on script idea.

Begin of my journal:

Fourth weeks: Monday 2nd-Friday 5th May 2016: This week, I finished the script idea before improving creating the proper one. I also finished drawing the storyboard- I used the script to help me to draw the right position for my characters and their angle. When finishing, before filming on the weekend I sort out the recce and risk assessments and put them on the blog, although I need someone to sign my risk assessment before adding to the blog. In addition, I already booked my filming equipment which I picked up on Friday. At weekend, I started the stop- motion filming which took me a longtime to finish. However, on Monday 9th, I finished my film (phew!) and I think my film look good.

Before filming, I also looked through the FMP sheet (Blog Audit) for the checklist to see if I had finished my project. I  only need to improve my journal, test shot, and finish my risk assessment and recce form. I also thought about which grade I would achieve this year and in conclusion I think I could get a Merit.

Fifth week: Monday 9th- Friday 13th May 2016:  This week I have been editing after finishing the film and bringing back the film equipment to the college (I used DSRL camera for claymation).

Whilst editing, I learnt two new skills from James. Firstly, he taught me how to create the same pace and speed for each clip. Moreover, Caroline and James said that my film (claymation) looked good, although James said I need to use both colour and black and white to make my film look smooth from when I have filmed there is a lot of flashing from when I have filmed.

Sixth week: Monday 16th- Friday 20th May 2016:  This week, I improved the editing and there was issue with ‘color correction’ because I used more than one the colour effect, which caused black and white to get a each layout on the colour effect. So I decided to use each a layer on the colour effect. So I decided to use five different effects for example ‘Bad TV’, ‘Age Film’ with  a film before added to my blog. Also, I managed to ask James to sign the risk assessment before I added to the blog including my claymation shot test. Later, I had a tutorial with James to look through the blog and he said that I needed to add more detail, and he said that I needed to add more detail, to my research evaluation, my view my research including the balance of positive and negative. I explained that I prefer using internet and survey rather than using book because it would be slow and is difficult to find the right book. When finishing, I added to my blog and I also completed part four: evaluate the final product and add it on the blog. In addition, James also said that I can achieve between Pass and Merit but hopefully to get Merit. He showed me a sheet of information about how to achieve the marks.  Read More

UAL Project Proposal

Wednesday 12th April 2016:

Section 1: Rationale (100-150 words MAX)

This year, I did seven units and I learnt a lot. In unit one, which is ‘Creep’ a group work task. I learnt how to use pre production, production and post production skills, including how to order camera equipment and work out which angles to use. Through each unit I became confident with these including completing on time of the deadline. I also enjoy the editing through there are new things I never learnt before for example in unit four (Telling My Story) I create a short documentary film: Deafness level- I learnt how to reduce the size of a clip of me signing to explain about hearing aids and cochlear implants before put it in the corner in front of the image. Moreover in unit six (Visual Investigation) my skill of using lighting is improve to create the effect of the lightning while create a short horror film: Silent Stalker. (151 words)

Section 2: Project Concept (200-250 words MAX)

My final project will be short animation film and my aim is make it visual without sound. It will focus on young children with general age from eleven and the parents. I will start with the research on Claymation through Internet. I will explore the list of short Claymation films and their directors. However, Claymation is not only thing I have in my mind. I could try to research the other styles of animation such as ‘traditional animation’ known as cel animation that is drawing each paper and flick it so you can see a character(s) or object(s) moving. In addition, I could use Lego animation and use it to create Stop Motion. All of these are secondary research. I can use survey to ask my parents and young children from age eleven to general age to ask which type of animation they prefer to watch and why. It should help me to develop an idea of which animation I should use for final project. This is my primary research. Finally the resources I could use for my final project and it could be clays, Legos or cel animation. I could use the survey or try to experiment each resource to see which is the best for filming. In addition, I also will use either digital camera (Canon Ixus 265) or digital camera (media pack) to try.  (227 words)

Section 3: Evaluation (50- 100 words MAX)

I will evaluate my work by updating my blog with help of pre production schedule. Before I start my final project, I will sort out when doing storyboard, script, reece and few pre production resources include the research. However if there are change of plan, I will continue update my blog and also change the schedule. Moreover, I will experiment the animation while filming- In addition, if I manage to finish filming early then I will check it through editing to see if there are no mistakes or if it is necessary to change for example improve the lighting.
